A 40-year-old Buffalo man suspected in a number of recent store robberies in Erie County remained in the Erie County Holding Center on Friday after his arrest by Orchard Park police detectives.

James E. Uptegrove, of Ryan Street, was arrested several hours after he allegedly threatened a clerk and stole several hundred dollars Thursday evening at a Kwik Fill gas station at 3625 North Buffalo St.

He is accused of forcing the clerk to lie down on the floor while claiming to be armed.

Police learned Uptegrove drove from the store in a 1998 Blue Chevy Blazer.

After Uptegrove was arrested by Orchard Park detectives later in the evening, he was identified as a suspect in other robberies that have occurrred in recent weeks at stores in Buffalo, West Seneca and Orchard Park.

Orchard Park detectives credited the help they received from Buffalo and West Seneca police in tracking Uptegrove.
