Pocus, a California sea lion who was popular with visitors at the Buffalo Zoo, died this week, apparently from a bacterial infection.

Pocus, who was nearly 12, was born at Sea World in Orlando, Fla., and arrived at the Buffalo Zoo when the Sea Lion Cove exhibit opened in May 2005. The maximum lifespan for sea lions is about 30 years.

Dallas, a male who arrived at the zoo at the same time as Pocus, is now the zoo’s lone sea lion.
