A tactile art installation featuring work by Tonawanda painter Larry Allen opens Friday in Allentown’s Pausa Art House (19 Wadsworth St.) during the neighborhood’s First Fridays Gallery Walk. Friday’s opening, which runs from 8 to 10 p.m., will feature music from local duo Dos Tipos, who will perform an evening of Puerto Rican and Cuban folk tunes called “Songs from El Barrio.”
Allen, according to a release from Pausa, has a “unique three-dimensional style, with an emphasis on texture. To achieve the desired texture, he builds up the relief of each painting by laying down thick layers of plaster of Paris mixed with terracotta, fierro and pumice, acrylic colors and ceramic glaze. He also invites viewers to touch his work, which may seem an unusual invitation.”
Pausa puts visual art on equal footing with internationally flavored musical performances and draws a cosmopolitan crowd. (Its menu features sandwiches and small plates named after composers, from Puccini to Iannis Xenakis.) Allen’s exhibition remains on view through Aug. 31.
Admission to the performance and opening is $5. Call 697-9069 or visit www.pausaarthouse.com.
