Veterans won’t forget great show of support
Last month, The News published my letter, “Buffalo has a chance to re-create Gate 38.” Many of your readers made that happen! On June 15, Honor Flight Buffalo returned from its 12th flight escorting 26 World War II veterans to see their World War II Memorial in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.
Although our flight arrived well after it was expected, every person who came to the airport waited patiently to welcome home this group of men also known as the Greatest Generation. Not one veteran had a dry eye coming through the never-ending line of family, friends, residents of the Buffalo community, the Patriot Guard Riders, young military groups, Buffalo Fire Bagpipers, veterans groups, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and Transportation Security Administration workers, Buffalo Airport firefighters and police, Uncle Sam and numerous other groups.
At the end of the welcome home, the entire group joined in to sing “God Bless America.” Priceless! This show of support for our heroes will never be forgotten by these men whose sacrifices allow Americans to enjoy the freedom we have today. Congratulations to all who came out to “re-create Gate 38.” I am proud to call Buffalo home.
