Discovered on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” when she was 10, Jackie Evancho is growing into a lovely young lady. She is 13 now, and continues to astonish people with her weirdly precocious vocal gifts. While she needs amplification – she would require considerable training to cut it on the opera stage – she has a marvelous, angelic soprano voice, tremendous vocal grace, and the stage presence of someone much older.
Evancho sings mostly the mainstream crossover repertoire – “O Mio Babbino Caro,” and hits by Andrew Lloyd Webber. But there is a poignancy to the sound of this mature voice coming out of this child. Her high notes are a joy. She seems to understand what she is singing about, too, even in world-weary songs like “Danny Boy” or “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.”
Evancho, a native of Pittsburgh, performs at 8 p.m. Friday at Artpark. Tickets are $55 to $75. There is no lawn seating. For information, call 754-4375.
