For its summer 2013 tour, the Dave Matthews Band is balancing a healthy portion of material from its most recent album, “Away From the World,” against cherry-picked goodies from its 20 year career. So the set lists have already proven to be interesting, and peppered with surprises.
More significantly for some – myself included – is the fact that the DMB has added to its instrumental muscle considerably over the past several years, which means that the jams have become much more interesting, and all the responsibility for keeping the improvisational elements of the show interesting no longer falls solely to uber-virtuosic drummer Carter Beauford. Now that longtime Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds has become a permanent fixture in the guitarist seat and renowned jazz saxophonist Jeff Coffin is on board, the DMB has never sounded better, or more inspired.
Matthews will kick off July properly, and will send the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center’s season into high gear, when he and the band arrive for a 7 p.m. show Wednesday. Tickets are $75 for reserved seating, $40.50 for lawn (Livenation.com and Ticketmaster).
