Louis Canastraro, of West Seneca, a glazier and radiologic technologist, died Thursday after a brief battle with cancer. He was 45.
Born in West Seneca, he went to work in his family’s business, Custom Mirrored Walls, after graduating from West Seneca West High School in 1985. He played a key role in creating the glasswork for many local businesses, including Salvatore’s Italian Gardens, Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More and the Seneca Niagara Casino.
In 2008, he decided to change careers and work in the medical field. He studied radiologic technology at Trocaire College, where he was awarded the Susan M. Heintzman Memorial Scholarship for leadership and academic achievement.
After receiving his degree, he worked as a radiologic technologist at Mercy Hospital until his death.
Mr. Canastraro also was a group leader for Alcoholics Anonymous at the VA Buffalo Medical Center, where he helped numerous people achieve sobriety.
Survivors include his wife, the former Joni Flewelling; a daughter, Gabriele G. “GiGi”; a son, Louis L.; his father, Anthony; three brothers, Charles, Stephen and Victor; and a sister, Marianne Meehan.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church, 8445 Greiner Road, Clarence.
