The No. 1 seeded doubles team of Alexandra Mueller of Abington, Pa., and Emily Harman, Winchester, Va., defeated No. 4 Sachie Ishizu of Japan and Denise Starr of Brooklyn, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 on Saturday to win the title at the $10,000 Sargent & Collins Women’s Tennis Championships.
The USTA Pro Circuit event is being hosted at the Miller Tennis Center, 5959 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville.
The singles final is today at 1 p.m. between Mueller, 25, and 23-year-old Alisa Kleybanova of Moscow.
An exhibition match featuring tournament players and local standouts will take place at 11 a.m.
There is no admission for either match and official tournament shirts will be given out to the first 200 spectators.
In her semifinal match, the No. 6-seeded Mueller defeated No. 1 Ishizu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Kleybanova eliminated No. 4 Sherazad Benamar of Paris, 6-0, 6-4. Kleybanova was formerly ranked No. 20 in the world and owned wins over several No. 1-ranked players, including Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
Kleybanova’s career-best achievements have been reaching the fourth round at two Grand Slams: Wimbledon and Australian Open as a direct entrant.
This is the third straight year the Miller Center has hosted this event. Jamie Loeb of Ossining was last year’s winner.
The Miller Tennis Center also is home to the Buffalo Tennis Hall of Fame, the University at Buffalo, D’Youville, Medaille and Daemen tennis teams.
