Donald J. Braasch, a construction company owner, died Tuesday in his Lake View home after a long illness. He was 80.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Manlius Military Academy in Syracuse and earned a business degree from Niagara University, where he had a four-year swimming scholarship and was a member of the Army ROTC.

Mr. Braasch owned and operated several businesses, including Frontier Excavating, Frontier Automotive, Shoreline Concrete Redimix and Donald J. Braasch Construction Inc.

He worked on many municipal projects, including the Union Ship Canal Walkway, the Babcock Bridge, the Scajaquada and Tifft Street bicycle paths and all the concrete work at the Sturgeon Point Marina.

His specialty was building concrete retaining walls along Lake Erie, including curved sea walls such as the one at the Dock of the Bay in Hamburg.

In the 1960s, he was an avid drag racer and won many times at Lancaster Speedway and Niagara Raceway with his car Hot Foot.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, the former Jean Tischendorf; a son, David; and a daughter, Cynthia Klopp.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Southtowns Christian Center, 6619 Southwestern Blvd., Lake View.
