Two University of Florida players were among eleven who advanced through the first round of the singles main draw Wednesday in the $10,000 Sargent and Collins, LLP Women’s Tennis Championship at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.

Lauren Embree of Marco Island, Fla., scored a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Stephanie Kent, Washington Depot, Conn., while Brianna Morgan, a sophomore on the Gators team from Beverly Hills, Calif., earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over Beatrice Capra, a qualifier from Ellicott City, Md. Embree completed her senior season at Florida this spring.

Although unseeded, Moore is a dark horse because she is coming off a victory last Sunday in a $10,000 tournament in Delaware. There, she defeated this tournament’s No. 2 seed, Jessica Moore of Perth, Australia, 6-1, 6-2. Moore was among three seeded players who won first-round matches Wednesday. Falling by the wayside was No. 3 Nika Kukharchuk of Russia. She fell to former Georgia Tech player Jillian O’Neill of Montreal, 6-2, 6-2.

Second round play continues today in singles while the doubles enter quarterfinals.

Admittance to tournament matches are free at 5959 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville. Play continues through the finals on Sunday.
