Mary Christie, a retired insurance underwriter and church secretary, died Sunday in her Williamsville home after a brief illness. She was 83.
Born in Hornell, the former Mary Petrakis was a graduate of Hornell High School. She worked as an insurance underwriter at Lawley Insurance and L.J. Doloff Insurance, retiring about 20 years ago.
In retirement, she began working as an office secretary in the Hellenic Church of the Annunciation in Buffalo. She later worked in the church library and gift shop.
An active Eastern Star member, Mrs. Christie joined Ivanhoe Chapter 160 in Hornell in 1948. She became affiliated with Salome-Naomi Chapter 102 in 1979 and served as matron in 1990. The chapter merged with Betsy Ross-Levant Chapter 695 in 1995, and at the time of her death, she was serving as marshal.
In 1992, she served as district deputy grand matron for the Erie District.
For almost 20 years, she also was adviser to the Erie District Study Club.
She was an active member of Athor Temple 19, Daughters of the Nile, and assisted as the money manager for luncheons and banquets.
She recently was installed as Lady of the Gates.
A longtime Kenmore resident, she regularly attended a sewing club and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilt-making.
Her husband of 54 years, Nicholas, died in 2007.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane DiGangi.
A funeral liturgy will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 146 W. Utica St.
