LICKIN’ GOOD – Barbecue lovers will celebrate the arrival of summer from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at Gateway-Longview’s fifth annual BBQ & Blues Bash on Mississippi Street in the Cobblestone District just east of First Niagara Center.
Providing the ribs and other barbecued delights will be Dinosaur BBQ, BW’s Smokin’ Barrels BBQ, Big Belly BBQ and the R&R BBQ Food Truck. Playing the blues will be the Mike Hayes Band and the Dave Constantino Band.
Tickets are $20 advance and are available online at www.BBQBluesBash.com, where full menu info is listed. Tickets at the gate will be $25. It’s a 21-and-over event, and photo ID will be required. Proceeds benefit Gateway-Longview, which provides care, counseling and support to children and families through 18 programs.
DOUBLING UP – Two of the most popular programs at the Hull Family Home and Farmstead, 5976 Genesee St., Lancaster, have been merged into a three-day Heritage Arts Festival this weekend.
It combines the American Music Festival, which features live historic music by local artists, with the Sheep-to-Shawl program, which offers arts and crafts demonstrations such as sheep-shearing, spinning and weaving, candlemaking and blacksmith.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for young people ages 10 to 18, free for children under 10. Tours of the two-century-old house will be available.
WELCOME BACK – Reservations are needed by Friday for the homecoming luncheon honoring 8th District American Legion Commander Alwin “Butch” O’Donnell and 8th District Auxiliary President Denice Perenc at 1 p.m. June 30 in South Buffalo Post 721, American Legion, at 136 Cazenovia St.
Cost is $15 and reservations can be made by calling Erie County American Legion headquarters at 852-6500. O’Donnell, a 43-year member of the South Buffalo Post, and Perenc, a 13-year member of Matthew Glab Auxiliary Unit 1477, have been visiting members in all eight Western New York counties in the district, as well as Ontario.
SHUTTERBUGS – Deadline is July 1 for entries in “As I See It,” a photography contest and exhibition for children and adults with developmental disabilities sponsored by Erie Homes for Children and Adults, L’Arche Erie and Corry Counseling Services. Photos will be judged in three categories – daily life, portraits and landscapes – and individuals may submit up to three photos per category.
Photos may be black and white or color and may be taken with any type of camera. The only requirement is that the person submitting the photo is the person who took the picture, either independently or by using an adaptive switch.
Entries will be judged by a group of professional photographers, and the top 25 entries will be exhibited this fall. Entry fee is $5 per photo, which covers the cost of displays, framing and postage. For info and applications, visit www.AsISeeItContest.com.
DIGGING IN – Now that summer’s almost here, the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center, off Big Tree Road in Hamburg, is open for fossil collecting every day. Visitors are advised to bring a plastic bucket or gallon zip-lock bag for the fossils they want to take home. Hammers, chisels and digging tools are welcome.
