Lawmakers are taking a whack at overgrown lawns in the town.

A proposed amendment to the Brush, Weeds, Obnoxious Growth and Debris Law would lower the maximum permitted height of grass to 6 inches, from 10.

Property owners who receive written notices have five days to take action before facing penalties, which begin with a fine. Ultimately, clean-up costs could be assessed to the property if the town has to arrange for cutting.

The intent is to deal with overgrown lawns before they get out of control.

“By the time we do the letters and everything, it’s already 10 inches,” said Town Supervisor Mary F. Holtz.

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Monday’s Town Board meeting, which begins at 6:45 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 3301 Broadway.
