The Discover Amherst Street Festival, Saturday in Black Rock, will have no shortage of interesting eats for participants.

If you want to check out a made-in-Black-Rock tubular meat delivery vehicle, head to Spar’s European Sausage & Meats (405 Amherst St., 876-6607) where there will be a wiener eating contest at 3:15 p.m.

There, starting around lunchtime, proprietor Joe Kennedy and his people will be grilling sausages to serve peckish passers-by for $4 to $5. One will be a Bavarian bratwurst, like a souped-up hot dog, mostly fine-textured pork with some beef. “Smooth as a hot dog but big as a sausage,” Kennedy said. “We’ll have a Hungarian, which is a fresh sausage with paprika and garlic, plus a hot Italian sausage, and a chicken sausage.”

If that doesn’t interest you, there’s also chicken for sale at the American Legion Post (533 Amherst St.).

It’s probably too late to get picked to judge the Best Pie in Black Rock Contest at the Assumption Church (9 to 9:30 a.m.), so you might appoint yourself judge of the strawberry shortcake at Our Lady of Black Rock School (available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 16 Germain St.).

Meander in the Woods
