BATAVIA – The City Council has become the latest in a long list of municipalities aiming to shoot down the New York SAFE Act, which was passed by the State Legislature earlier this year in an attempt to expand gun controls.

Referring to the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the City Council’s resolution states: “The Council, elected to represent the people of Batavia, is duly sworn by their oath of office to uphold the U.S. Constitution.” It says that requirements of the law, such as verifying ownership of certain types of weapons every five years and limiting the number of rounds “does not increase the safety of the public.”

The resolution, adopted Monday, also criticizes the required documentation of ammunition sales as “a significant unfunded mandate on business.
