The Marilla Town Board will hold four public hearings today, but it is expected to act on only two of them.
Action is expected on the amended zoning law that will allow property owners who have been granted a zoning change extended time to build as long as they prove they are working on the property in good faith.
Supervisor George Gertz said the amended law is a good one. If no work is performed on a rezoned piece of property in a year, the zoning will revert back to its original status.
The board will vote on the car show permit and a resolution to close Two Rod Road for the one-day event July 27.
A pubic hearing on a lot on East Blood Road will not be acted on by the board until the town hears from the county. The same goes for a rezoning request for a parcel on Clinton Street owned by Leon Berner.
The town has to hear from the county and the state Department of Environmental Conservation regarding wetlands on the site. This has to be done every five years, said Gertz.
Warren Handley told the board it has been brought to his attention that half the geranium plants purchased by the town have been removed from the Evergreen Cemetery. He said the town put them in pots on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day, with the intention of moving them to other town sites in three days.
But somebody took them before they could be moved. They cost the town $1,000.
The other two cemeteries in town have plenty of shade, but the Evergreen Cemetery has lots of sun, and there is no way to water the plants, so they always have been moved to prevent them from going to waste.
Highway Superintendent Ron Unverdorben said his crew will pour a sidewalk on each side of the flag pole at the Veterans Memorial so people don’t step in the mud. He is also building an archway to show medallions of all five armed services.
The board reviewed prices for a computer-generated message sign for the front of the Community Center at 1840 Two Rod Road. Protek’s price is $15,475 for a 42-inch-by-61-inch sign.
The board received a letter from a Stolle Road resident who purchased his home one year ago and is complaining of water problems that he would like the town to pay to have fixed. He wants the town to dig a ditch of 100 feet uphill toward Elma.
But the town cannot spend money on a private property.
Gertz and Unverdorben said the house is not in danger, the water runs through the yard and was there when he bought the property.
The owner said the water runs through his land from farm fields and is polluting a pond.
The board directed the town attorney to write a letter to the owner explaining the town’s situation.
