Special Olympics New York is inviting the public to cheer on the 1,800 athletes and coaches competing in the annual State Summer Games next weekend at the University at Buffalo. All events and parking are free.
Opening ceremonies, including a parade of athletes and the lighting of the Special Olympics cauldron, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in Alumni Arena on the North Campus in Amherst. A special song, “No Age in Love,” will be premiered by songwriter Tom Lorentz of East Amherst, a member of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.
Competition will take place Saturday in eight Olympic-style sports. Five of those sports – track and field, aquatics, basketball, powerlifting and tennis – will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at UB.
Bowling will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in AMF Thruway Lanes, 1550 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga. Volleyball will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Buffalo Niagara Court Center, 425 Meyer Road, West Seneca. Gymnastics will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Flips Gymnastics, 6017 S. Transit Road, Lockport.
