We should maintain current government
Amherst voters have been given a unique opportunity, by our elected officials, to vote to maintain our current form of town government.
This referendum, proposed and seconded by a Republican and a Democrat, will give residents the opportunity to vote for all Town Board candidates, and make each elected official responsible to the entire town.
This is not a political issue, but a quality-of-life issue, and it gives voters a bigger voice in our town.
Amherst isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly not broken, so why change it and find out later it was a mistake? Talk about efficiency – there’s been no tax increase in Amherst in three years, and it costs residents only 21 cents a year to pay for a council member’s salary. That’s quality government at a very cheap price. Compare that to other towns.
