Grand Island Town Hall was open Monday only for “essential services” because Sunday’s severe thunderstorms disabled a wastewater “lift” station serving the building and damaged traffic signals at a number of intersections, according to Chief Kevin Koch of the Grand Island Fire Company.

While Town Supervisor Mary Cooke got the first floor of Town Hall cleaned up Sunday after it had been covered by wastewater backup due to the power loss, members of the fire company helped town police in directing traffic at various intersections until town highway crews restored the traffic signals, according to Koch.

Fire in an apartment building in the 2100 block of Bedell Road at about 4:15 a.m. Sunday was traced to an underground power transformer that had overheated and which a National Grid crew cooled off with about 1,000 gallons of water, the fire chief reported.
