DURHAM, N.C. – It didn’t take long for the Durham Bulls to take control of Monday’s game against the Buffalo Bisons.

The Bulls scored nine runs in the first inning as the Bisons went on to lose, 11-7, in the first game of a four-game set at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Ricky Romero got his fourth start of the season for the Bisons, but the southpaw failed to make it out of the first inning, allowing eight earned runs on five hits with five walks.

Durham led, 10-0, in the fifth, when the Bisons cut the Bulls lead in half. Mike Nickeas lead off the inning with a walk, Mike McCoy singled to right and left fielder Eugenio Velez walked. Moises Sierra hit a double to center, clearing the bases and cutting Durham’s lead to 10-3. Sierra broke out of his 10-game, 5-for-42 slump and finished the game 1-for-5 with three RBIs. Mauro Gomez hit his ninth home run on the year and the Bulls led, 10-5, after the fifth.

In the seventh, Gomez hit a two-run shot for his 10th of the season. He finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The loss continues a troubling trend for the Bisons against the Bulls. They were 1-7 against the Bulls last year, and are winless in its last seven games in Durham. The Herd hasn’t won in Durham since a 9-1 victory on June 21, 2011 and is 2-14 in its last 16 games there. The Bisons haven’t won a season series over the Bulls since 2006. The series resumes at 7:05 tonight (Radio 1520 AM) with Justin Germano (3-4, 7.16) going against Durham’s Mike Montgomery (0-1, 4.15).
