Background checks should be mandatory

I know a person who has had a license for a pistol for more than 30 years but never had a need to fire it. Originally, he had to produce three character references and had a background check done. If all states followed New York State’s procedure, that would help solve the gun problems, providing the National Rifle Association got off its high horse and provided something constructive instead of its asinine attitude. What would help is if NRA members developed some backbone and canceled their membership.
