University at Buffalo professor of English Jerold C. Frakes, a noted scholar of medieval literature, received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship to support his study of the emergence of early Yiddish literature during the 2013-14 academic year. Frakes is one of 175 scholars, artists and scientists in 56 disciplines to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship this year. They were chosen from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants.
Amherst Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Colleen DiPirro was recently elected chairwoman of the Western New York Chamber Alliance, a group of 17 Chamber of Commerce executives representing five counties who meet regularly to share resources, cross-promote events and drive public policy.

The Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Olean General Hospital has received a full three-year accreditation for its hyperbaric oxygen services from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. The center focuses on the treatment and evaluation of chronic, problematic and nonhealing wounds, using the latest generation of wound-healing technology under the direction of specially trained wound-care physicians.
