Former champions – Joe Ciccone and Liz Johnson – advanced to today’s final four of the 50th George A. Obenauer Masters Bowling Tournament at AMF Thruway Lanes.

Ciccone, a two-time winner, and Jeff Hejna of Depew will meet in today’s winners bracket final while Johnson and Mike Zarcone face each other in the elimination bracket.

Both Johnson and Zarcone won by margins in the final elimination matches Saturday night. Johnson, with experience on the men’s and women’s pro tours, overwhelmed 18-year-old Andrew Herbert of Eden, 671-518. Zarcone had a 112-pin margin over Adam Collura of Buffalo (668-556).

Earlier Saturday, PBA Tour pro Ciccone handed Zarcone his first loss of the double-elimination match play, 643-589. Hejna triumphed over Herbert of Eden in the other winners bracket semifinal, 610-577.

Top qualifier Chad Mee was among four bowlers who lost in Saturday’s first squad of elimination matches. Also losing were Jacob Hiam of West Seneca, Mike Sadowy of Clarence Center and 1972 Obie champion Tony Verdi of Hamburg.

Johnson survived two elimination matches before avenging her 649-619 loss to Herbert on Friday.

Johnson first topped Mee, 667-623, ending the hopes of the 17-year-old Frontier High star, and then eliminated Carl Kinyon of Lockport, 636-564.

Ciccone, who won the Masters in 2000 and 2008, averaged 211.4 for his four matches in the tournament. The Ciccone-Hejna winners bracket final will be at 1 p.m. today as will the Johnson-Zarcone match. The loser of Ciccone-Hejna and either Johnson or Zarcone will meet at 2 p.m. with the championship final scheduled for 3 p.m.
