BIG WEEKEND – Pvt. Leonard Post Jr. Post 6251, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 2450 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga, will be the site of the 69th annual Sixth District Convention of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary on Friday and Saturday.

The convention begins Friday with a fish fry from 3:30 to 8 p.m. and Ladies Auxiliary registration from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday starts with registration from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by a joint memorial service and business sessions, including the election of officers.

The Sixth District Commander’s and President’s Dinner takes place Saturday evening, with cocktails at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30. Outgoing Sixth District Commander Lance Becker and President Katherine Macris will be honored.

ANCIENT TRACES – Penn Dixie has arranged for a return visit from fossil hunter Joe Kchodl, better known as PaleoJoe, at 7 p.m. Friday in the auditorium of the Gateway Executive Office, 3556 Lake Shore Road, Blasdell.

His topic will be “Trilobite Treasures: Arthropods of New York’s Ancient Seas,” providing perspective on the prehistoric creatures whose fossils are found in the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg.

WAR STORIES – Preserving the military experiences of his great-great-grandfather, who died in 1865 in the Civil War, is Val Dunham, a professor emeritus at Coastal Carolina University.

Dunham has written a book called “Allegany to Appomattox: The Life and Letters of Pvt. William Whitlock of the 188th New York Volunteers,” based on a collection of 39 long-lost letters that Whitlock wrote to his wife.

Dunham will speak about the book and autograph copies at 2 p.m. Sunday at a meeting of the Allegany Area Historical Association in the Heritage Center, 25 N. Second St., Allegany. It’s free and open to the public.
