ROCHESTER — Abby Wambach scored two first-half goals and they held up for the WNY Flash in a 2-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over the previously unbeaten FC Kansas City at Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday night.

The win evened the Flash’s record at 2-2-1. Kansas City is 2-1-1.

Wambach scored with her left foot in the 34th minute with an assist from Vernoca Perez. A long ball by defender Brittany Taylor initiated the scoring play. It was the first goal Kansas City had allowed except for one penalty kick.

Wambach struck again in the 39th minute to make it 2-0.

Lauren Cheney scored for FC Kansas City with an assist from Leigh Ann Robinson in the 53rd minute.

Only some stellar goalkeeping by Nicole Barnhart of FC Kansas City kept Wambach from scoring a hat trick. Barnhart had several outstanding saves, including three against Wambach in the first half alone and another in the second half.

Wambach now has three goals an assists in four games for the Flash.

Flash goalkeeper Adrian Franch faced more shots than Barnhart but managed to keep Kansas City off the board after Cheney’s goal.

Midfielder Carli Lloyd made her season’s debut for the Flash in the second half. She has been sidelined after suffering a left ahoudler injury during a match in Portugal for the U.S. national team.

The 30-year-old former Rutgers star had two shots on goal in the second half.

The next game for the Flash will be against Chicago at 7:05 p.m. on May 24 in Sahlen’s Stadium.
