Team Mesi is back in business except Joe Mesi isn’t stepping into the ring to engage an opponent.

Team Mesi has announced it will promote Lockport kickboxer Amer Abdallah. Abdallah, the World Kickboxing Association United State light heavyweight champion, owns Lockport Athletic & Fitness Club and has a 13-0 record. He is scheduled to fight a still to be determined opponent June 8 at Kenan Center in Lockport. Ticket information will be announced later.

Abdallah, 35, has drawn well for fights in his hometown – including selling out the 2,500-capacity Kenan Center. He’s enlisted Jack Mesi, who organized successful fight cards earlier this century in Buffalo with his son Joe serving as the headliner, to help him be a drawing card outside of Lockport.

“We’ve been working with him off and on. ... We’ve been to his fights. He’s kind of won our hearts and attention,” Jack Mesi said Saturday. “We’re going to prime him and get him ready to be the world champion.

“It’s not exactly boxing but it’s close enough. This kid has the love [for his sport]. ... This kid deserves the best shot we can give him.”
