Anita Alvarez, a sophomore at Kenmore West High School and member of the Town of Tonawanda Aquettes, has been named to the USA Junior National Synchronized Swimming team. Alvarez joins nine girls from California, one from Arizona and one from Oregon on the 12-member squad. They begin training in June in Riverside, Calif., and will represent the United States at the UANA Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico in August.

Over the past four months, Alvarez has attended qualifying competitions in Santa Clara, Calif, Greensboro, N.C., and Walnut Creek, Calif. The first phase consisted of the top 50 synchronized swimmers in the U.S. ages 15-18. The final phase was narrowed to 20 competitors.


The Buffalo Turners participated in the Level 6 New York State Championship held May 4-5 at Gymnastics Unlimited in Orchard Park. Shay Sommers placed third on vault. Rebecca O’Connor finished fourth on vault, seventh on bars, and fifth on balance beam to take fourth all around. Sarah Denman was fourth on balance beam. Eve Giancarlo took fourth on floor exercise. Kemba Seals finished third on vault and fifth on bars.


Sarah Notaro of Williamsville won the girls under-19 division at the International Junior Golf Tour 36-hole event at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor. She fired rounds of 88 and 78 to beat Kristen Bromley of Pittsford by one stroke.
