There are sports bars, and then there are sports bars. Flattery’s Irish Pub in West Seneca is the latter. Where other places might settle for some televisions set to ESPN and a pool table out back, Flattery’s boasts much, much more.
I visited Flattery’s with my boyfriend, David, on a quiet Wednesday night. A spacious, L-shaped bar set against the back wall greets patrons when they walk in and dominates the main room. There’s a separate dining area for those who want to enjoy a bite to eat away from the din of the bar crowd. Baseball, basketball and hockey showed over the five televisions in the bar area, and there is also the usual assortment of entertainment such as a pool table, jukebox, video games and dartboards.
However, one crowning asset dominates this establishment, an asset that was sadly still under wraps for the season during our visit: a sand volleyball court. This week, Flattery’s started running volleyball leagues of varying ability levels daily and it is offering a beach soccer league for the third year running. There is also a dart league, as well as what the Flattery’s website calls the “largest patio in the Southtowns.” This is a place just dying for warm weather.
We took a place at the end of the bar and eyed the 12 beers on tap. After some deliberation, David chose his go-to brew – a Killian’s Irish Red ($4) and I went with a glass of McKenzie’s Seasonal Reserve ($4.50). Bursting with nutmeg and cinnamon flavors, it was a delightful twist on a traditional cider.
Our bartender, Danny, took good care of us and the other dozen or so people at the bar, taking our drink and food orders promptly, checking in often and even offering his opinions in our discussion about the latest “Game of Thrones” book. The first glass my cider came in was chipped and cracked, something I didn’t mention until I asked for another drink. When Danny saw the offending glassware, he apologized profusely, brought me a new drink and didn’t charge me for the first one. It was a nice touch.
The crowd varied from 20-somethings to middle-aged regulars in jeans and sweatshirts. Flattery’s is a place to relax and have fun, and the wardrobe selections reflected that. Very basic bar food is available, including wings, sandwiches, chicken fingers and the like, but Danny told us they’re in the process of rebuilding their menu, so more extensive selections will follow.
With the early arrival of warm weather, the volleyball court and the back patio are open and hopping. And Flattery’s should be a destination for anyone seeking a cold drink, a chill atmosphere and a touch of friendly competition.
