It’s hard to believe that Bauhaus turns 35 this year. The band – fronted by iconic vocalist Peter Murphy, with guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J and drummer Kevin Haskins – might be cited as the progenitor of what we’ve come to call goth-rock, though such Halloween-ish implications do not do full justice to the breadth of Bauhaus’ dramatic sound.
Murphy, aside from the odd reformation with his old bandmates, has been doggedly pursuing an inspired solo career since Ash, J and Haskins split to form Love & Rockets more than 25 years ago. He’s released more than a few classics beneath his own imprimatur, but this year, Murphy is touring in honor of the Bauhaus catalog. Dubbed the “Mr. Moonlight Tour,” the all-Bauhaus show will, as Murphy says on his website, act as “a way of tipping my hat to my own audience … those who discovered my early work, as well as new and old fans of those years with strong wishes to hear the music of my band crackle and spark in the live arena.”
Murphy performs at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Town Ballroom (681 Main St.). Ours will open the show. Tickets are $25 in advance, $29 day of show (box office, Tickets.com).
