The body of a male driver who crashed through a barrier on Church Street near the Youngstown Yacht Club and plunged into the Niagara River early today has been recovered, according to a U.S. Coast Guard officer.

A yacht club vessel was used to transport the body of the unidentified driver, who was killed after his red Ford Explorer landed upside down in about a foot of water in the river, said Petty Officer First Class Janard Langsford. The accident happened at the Fox Boyz Marina.

The driver was westbound on Church Street, where he apparently ran a stop sign at Main Street, crashed through a guardrail and sign, traveled about 200 feet across a lawn before plunging another 200 or so feet down an embankment, landing in the river around 7 a.m.

It is not known if fog was a factor in the accident. A neighbor said it was the third accident at that spot in the past 18 years.

The body of the driver was transported to Youngstown Yacht Club for transfer to the Niagara County Coroner, said Langsford. An autopsy will be performed Friday at the Erie County Medical Center, he said.

Crews from the Youngstown Fire Department and the Coast Guard Station Niagara remain at the scene to retrieve the vehicle, Langsford said.
