Four experts will talk about crime, punishment and the community in a panel discussion about the criminal- justice system next Thursday in the Burchfield Penney Art Center, 1300 Elmwood Ave.

The discussion will focus on how to create a more effective system that doesn’t disrupt families, increase poverty and that gives a second chance to young ex-offenders transitioning back into the community. Panelists are: Karima Amin, founder/director, Prisoners Are People Too; Ron Stewart, a SUNY Buffalo State sociology professor; Umar Adeyola, founder of HEART [Helping Empower At-Risk Teens]; and Alfonso Carter, an ex-offender who became a successful entrepreneur.

Rod Watson, Buffalo News columnist and urban affairs editor, will moderate.

RSVP to no later than Tuesday.
