The local high school rowing season opened with the traditional John Bennett Regatta at West Side Rowing Club, drawing more than 25 schools from throughout the state, as well as Pennsylvania and Ontario.

Those Canadian crews sure went home happy.

Of the 23 events held on a sunny Sunday afternoon on the Black Rock Channel, 17 were won by out-of-town crews, including 16 from Ontario.

Canisius won five boys races: the lightweight eight, junior eight, flyweight eight, freshman/novice eight and freshman/novice four. St. Joe’s won the junior four with coxswain.

Upper Canada College beat two Canisius boats in the senior eight while fellow Toronto school Havergal beat Nardin in the girls lightweight eight. Other Canadian crews winning Sunday were: Branksome Hall (Toronto), Sir Winston Churchill (St. Catharines) and Notre Dame College (Welland). The Steel City Rowing Club of Verona, Pa., won the women’s senior four.

CBA edges St. Joe’s lax

St. Joe’s hosted a powerful team from a powerful region for lacrosse on Sunday afternoon, and it nearly knocked them off.

Syracuse power Christian Brothers Academy scored the game-winner with 40 seconds left in the game to beat St. Joe’s, 13-12, at St. Joe’s Robert T. Scott Athletic Complex.

Each team is now 9-3.

Myles Young had four goals and one assist for St. Joe’s, while Tom Hubert had three goals and Dom Perna had two goals and two assists. Andy Pawenski had a goal and an assist for the Marauders, but he was outstanding in the faceoff battles, helping St. Joe’s win 20 of 29 draws.

St. Joe’s had a chance to win the game, as it had possession of the ball with the score tied at 12-12 and about two minutes to go. The Marauders worked for a good shot, but it was saved and CBA went on a fast break the other way, with J.R. Zazzara finishing it off with a goal.

St. Joe’s returns to Monsignor Martin Association action today with a game at St. Francis.
