FLYING HIGH – Famous aviator Amelia Earhart, who disappeared mysteriously over the Pacific in 1937, comes back to life Thursday evening in Newstead Town Hall, 5 Clarence Center Road, Akron, in a portrayal by storyteller Denise Reichert. CLOSING OUT A CAREER – A highly respected figure who just retired from the U.S. Labor Department will be honored by law enforcement officials at a testimonial party Wednesday night in the Hotel @ the Lafayette. Joseph S. Wasik, 57, retired April 30 after 34 years of government service. He spent the last 25 years as Buffalo district director of the Office of Labor Management Standards. His office monitors labor unions in 49 counties and takes part in investigations into embezzlement and other crimes by labor leaders.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW? – Members of 25 teams will test their worldly wisdom from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Montante Cultural Center at Canisius College in WorldQuest 2013, a global trivia game sponsored by the International Institute of Buffalo.

TIME OF NEED – Two days after his companion of 25 years, Linda Snedden, died after a lengthy illness right after Christmas, Julio Serrano died unexpectedly in their City of Tonawanda home. To help their sons, ages 12 to 20, friends and family are holding a benefit from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday in Tonawandas Post 264, American Legion, 60 Main St., City of Tonawanda.

There will be auctions, raffles, entertainment, food and beverages. There also will be a cash bar. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Tickets for teens 13 to 17 are $5. EXTRA CARE – Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a series of classes for people caring for older relatives and friends, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 885 Sweet Home Road, Amherst, and continue on Wednesdays through June 12.
