Martin L. Schechtman, general manager of Graphic Controls Corp. in Orchard Park, died Thursday in Oregon. He was 93.
Schechtman, who had a second career as director of Canisius College’s Wehrle School of Business Internship Program, grew up in New York City and earned a bachelor’s degree in organic chemistry from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.
He later joined the Marines and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and later in China during peacetime. After leaving the Marines, Schechtman worked at Graphic Controls from 1968 to 1983, rising to the position of general manager of the Coated Products Division and company vice president.
In 1984, he began a second career at Canisius and over the next 21 years helped place hundreds of business students in jobs across the region.
He retired in 2005 at age 85 and moved to Oregon to escape the snow and live near one of his daughters.
Schechtman, who was active in the First Presbyterian Church in East Aurora, is remembered by friends and family for a boundless energy that was exceeded only by his passion for mentoring students.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Z. Harvey and Gertrude Maloney; and two sons, Martin and Robert.
