Stephen J. Paskuly, 71, a retired German and history teacher at City Honors School, died Thursday at his Gowanda home surrounded by his family.

Born in Lackawanna, he was a graduate of Canisius High School and earned master’s degrees from Canisius College and Niagara University.

He started teaching in 1963 at Woodlawn Junior High School, and retired from City Honors in 1996. During his tenure, he was awarded the Louis E. Yavner Award for distinguishing himself as a leader in teaching others about the Holocaust and other human rights issues. He also was the coach for the City Honors debate team, and through his tutelage, many students were awarded scholarships.

A successful author, poet, historian and playwright, his achievements include the publication of “Death Dealer” as well as numerous poems and short stories. His hobbies included sailing, fishing, traveling, sport shooting and motorcycle riding.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, the former Carol A. Jacobs; a son, Stephen; a daughter, Laura; his mother, Grace; and two sisters, Diane Galanti and Andrea Schuessler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Main Street and Erie Avenue, Gowanda.
