‘Veterans Helping Veterans’ focus of Armed Forces Week

The Western New York Armed Forces Week Committee was so pleased to see The News editorial supporting an important group in our community, the WNY Veterans Housing Coalition. This year, as part of WNY Armed Forces Week, May 5 to 11, we will pay special tribute to this group with our theme of “Veterans Helping Veterans.” In honoring the coalition, we will recognize it as a viable and functional veterans not-for-profit support agency that reminds citizens and the armed forces that a special compact, trust and responsibility exists among us to care for our veterans’ post-conflict needs.

As Gen. George Washington keenly noted more than 240 years ago, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by our nation.” The coalition keeps faith with Washington’s call for responsible and accountable civil-military engagement that supports the opportunity for the 99 percent of our society to uphold and keep this sacred faith and unbreakable compact with the 1 percent of our warrior population that protected and fought for our cherished American freedoms.

All the members of the WNY Armed Forces Committee will continue to support the military service of our warriors and the families that supported them during our nation’s darkest hours. Armed Forces Week will honor the WNY Veterans Housing Coalition at our opening ceremony at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday at Canalside next to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park. The public is welcome to attend.

The Armed Forces Committee, made up of all services’ members, looks forward to continuing our special compact in support of the mission of the Veterans Housing Coalition, as part of our efforts to show our continued support for “Veterans Helping Veterans.”
