An orphaned polar bear cub that was taken to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage nearly two months ago is getting ready for his new home at the Buffalo Zoo.

Executive Director Patrick Lampi of the Alaska Zoo told a television station in Anchorage that the cub, named Kali, has gone from being bottle-fed to eating solid foods and is gaining almost a pound a day.

He said a veterinarian from the Buffalo Zoo will go to Anchorage sometime around May 14 to check on the cub before he is escorted his new home.

In Buffalo, the cub will meet up with Luna, the popular cub that was born at the Buffalo Zoo in November.

Lampi said the permitting process and Kali’s transfer across the border from Canada is taking longer than expected because of the federal sequester.
