NIAGARA FALLS – A 2-year-old boy was taken to Women & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo after falling out of a second-floor window at a Center Avenue home just after 2 p.m. today.

Police Superintendent E. Bryan DalPorto said the boy never lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. His current condition was unknown and his name was not released.

No charges were filed against the father, who was at home at the time, but had fallen asleep. However, the case was turned over to Child Protective Services for investigation, said Lt. Michael Corcoran.

Corcoran said there were four other children in the house at the time: two 5-year-olds, a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old.

Authorities believe one of the 5-year-olds apparently climbed up to a locked window, opened it and pushed out the screen.

Neighbors who saw the child fall alerted police.

“It appeared to be truly an accident,” Corcoran said. “The father works midnights, the mother works at 1:30 in the afternoon and they have a baby sitter come daily, who was on the way. It happened in between this time when the father was half awake.”

He said the family had other precautions such as baby safety gates on the stairs and said the father told them he will now be adding child safety locks on the windows.
