Two programs have been set up for teachers to expand their outdoors education skills this spring and summer.
New York Sea Grant offers teachers a week-long Lake Ontario Learning Cruise set for July 7-13. A workshop cruise aboard the 180-foot Lake Guardian out of Youngstown is open to educators of students in grades 4 to 12.
The program includes hands-on and classroom participation with aquatic scientists collecting and analyzing lake data. For more details on applying, go to nyseagrant.org/lakeguardian. For additional information, call Helen Domske at 645-3610.
The Department of Environmental Conservation and other environmental organizations have a slate of Great Lakes Institute one-day workshops for teachers in Monroe, Niagara and Erie counties. Held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, educators meet at sites in Rochester and the Buffalo area. For a listing of the remaining seven workshops, go to dec.ny.gov/education/80269.html. Harrisburg show back
The Harrisburg Outdoor Show, the largest show of its kind in the Northeast, was canceled this past February when dealers boycotted over a ban on the sale of semi-automatic rifles.
Attending the nine-day show had been an enjoyable winter tradition for outdoors folk for 65 years. It featured national celebrities, more than a thousand vendors of hunting, fishing, and camping gear along with outfitters from around the world.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center announced that the National Rifle Association has been selected to host this sport show in 2014. The show will be renamed the Great American Outdoor Show.
NRA officials noted its participation at 50 sport shows annually and conducting its national convention each year will bring to the Harrisburg show a good variety of exhibits, seminars, demonstrations and evening entertainments. The event will be held Feb. 1-9, 2014.
Avid fly angler Adam Slavinski, 15, of Cheektowaga has been selected as one of 12 youths to attend a Bighorn River Alliance Youth Adventure in Fort Smith, Ark., June 16 to 19. The Lake Erie Chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers submitted Adam’s name for inclusion in this adventure. He looks forward to sharing his experiences at the chapter’s meeting on June 20.
