A Lackawanna High School senior died of unknown causes Friday while on a class trip in Florida, a school district official told The Buffalo News on Saturday.
Jeffrey Cintron was one of 48 seniors and four chaperones from Lackawanna on the senior class trip to Disney World when he became ill Friday evening, said interim Superintendent Anne G. Spadone.
“My understanding is [Friday] night Jeff and his friends were on Disney property and he had complained about back spasms or backaches,” Spadone said. “He called his chaperones to say he was returning to his room. They were going to meet him there.”
At the hotel, which was also on Disney property, Jeff was checked out by an EMT.
“His vital signs seemed to be OK,” Spadone said.
One of the chaperones and a student accompanied Jeff in a taxi to an urgent care center, Spadone said. Jeff’s family was notified about what was happening, she added.
“On his way, he become ill and lost consciousness,” Spadone said.
The doctor at the urgent care center immediately had an ambulance take Jeff to the hospital, where he died at 10:45 p.m., Spadone said.
“They worked on him in the ambulance,” Spadone said, “but he never regained consciousness and passed away in the emergency room.”
Spadone wasn’t aware of Jeff’s having any medical conditions. An autopsy will be performed. The group from Lackawanna was scheduled to return home Monday.
“I talked to his mom earlier today and expressed our deepest condolences and offered our help for anything she might need,” Spadone said Saturday.
