Pete Maduri Jr., is seeking to achieve duel goals during the upcoming drag racing season beginning when Elegant Builders Raceway Park in Lancaster opens their 2013 International Hot Rod Association drag racing points season on Friday night.
First, Maduri hopes to repeat his EBRP Quick 16 class championship feat of a year ago. Quick 16 is EBRP’s top weekly IHRA drag racing division.
Maduri and former points teammate Mark Talmadge proved to be the class of EBRP’s (formerly known as Dunn Tire Raceway Park) Quick 16 class, winning this division’s 2012 title at the Lancaster area track.
Maduri hopes to earn another Quick 16 title at EBRP this year, but if he is to do so he will have to do it in solo fashion.
As a secondary goal this season, Maduri will pursue his dream of racing at regional and national levels at other tracks, but in the process will miss four valuable points nights during this season’s EBRP campaign. This will be quite a hurdle to overcome during his EBRP title defense since he won’t have a teammate to assist him.
“Mark will be doing his own racing this season so I will be on my own,” said Maduri. “He was a great teammate and although I ran the point number most of the nights last season and got four wins, there where five race nights when I couldn’t compete at Lancaster. Mark stepped up and ran the point number and got a couple of wins to help out our team. We couldn’t have won the championship without him.
“I consider Mark to be the best bracket drag racer in this area and the thought I will be racing against him instead of with him is going to be tough.”
In IHRA bracket drag racing, drivers are allowed to join a class point race as partners but on each race night, only one of them can put the team point number on their car that night and earn points toward the championship.
When drag racers cannot make a point race at EBRP they get 30 waiver attendance points for the night but will not earn any qualifying or elimination points for that race. Drivers are limited to three waivers a season.
Maduri ran the point number most nights last season but relied a great deal on Talmadge to earn points when Maduri was not at EBRP.
“I missed two nights last season because I was racing out of town and another night to compete in a national bowling tournament,” said Maduri, who turned 26 on April 15. “I also had two nights where I could not compete because of mechanical problems. Mark did the job when I was not there.
“I know it will be tough to win the title at Lancaster missing that many races and having no teammate to fill in but I want to get my career up to a more divisional and national level so I’m trying to do the best I can at both,” said Maduri, who has five Junior Dragster championships in a career that began at age 16. He also has a Pro ET and TNT Hot Rod Series titles to compliment last year’s Quick 16 crown.
Maduri will campaign two brand new dragsters in 2013. When EBRP practice was canceled due to the weather last weekend, Maduri went to Empire Dragway in Leicester for a test and tune day Sunday.
He took his new Horton chassis dragster, which sports a 406-cubic inch Chevy small block engine to Empire, and hit a best run of 5.15 seconds at 130 miles per hour on Empire’s one-eighth mile portion of their strip. This dragster will be used at EBRP the first two weeks of the season and then be driven exclusively in regional, division and national races.
“I was really satisfied with the way the car ran at Empire last Sunday and now we are ready for the opener at Lancaster with it and therefore we can now spend our time concentrating on completing the other car,” Maduri said.
Maduri and his team, which includes his father Pete Maduri Sr., are completing the construction of their second dragster, a 2008 Mullis chassis machine that will be powered by a nitrous assisted 605 Chevy big block engine that produces 1,100 horsepower. It will run the Quick 16 class at EBRP and the Top Dragster class at upper level National Hot Rod Association events.
• EBRP will run a three race Hoosier Modified Series in 2012 as part of their stock car schedule.
Dates are: Mr. Modified 100, May 11; Hoosier 100, Aug. 3 and the Tommy Druar/Tony Jankowiak Memorial Modified 110, Aug. 17.
The Modifieds will also return for the US Open 100 on Sept. 22, which will be a Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour event.
• Ransomville Speedway will run its Test, Tune & Time Trial Night on Friday at 7:15 p.m. The top two drivers in time trails in each class will start on the front row for their respective class opening night feature races May 3.
• The Patriot Sprint Tour will open their 2013 Canada Series schedule this Saturday at the Merrittville Speedway. The season opening 7 p.m. Spring Sizzler card will also showcase the 358 Modifieds and Sportsman.
• The Wyoming County International Speedway has partnered with the Flamboro (Ont.) Speedway to run a winged asphalt Sprint Car schedule in 2013. Five races will be held at each track. The five dates at WCIS are May 24, June 21, July 19, Aug. 16 and Oct. 5. Former Holland Motorsports Complex competitor George Quintana is one of the leaders of the new venture.
• The Holland Motorsports Complex will present their annual stock car show May 3-10 at the McKinley Mall.
• Buffalo’s Harry Curtin finished 12th in the GTS class and 28th overall in the Pirelli World Challenge sports car event held as part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach last Sunday.
