Close followers of Buffalo’s bustling theater scene will not be surprised to learn that another group of young and energetic actors has formed a company. Second Generation Theatre, as the new group is known, will host its first major public event, a fundraiser, Sunday in Pettibones Grill. The fundraiser will help offset the costs of its ambitious June production of “Into the Woods.”
The company is a shared project of actors and University at Buffalo graduates Kelly Copps, Arin Lee Dandes and Kristin Bentley. The company formed, its founders said, in order to build off the creative momentum of the regional theater community and to bring the creative energy of a younger generation to the scene. The idea of producing Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale “Into the Woods,” a large and complex affair which hasn’t appeared here since the early 1990s, arose out of the trio’s shared love of the show and a great deal of interest from others in the theater community.
“We never intended to start with a show so large,” Copps said. “But if we can do it right and start with a bang … What better way to start?”
Sunday’s fundraiser will feature performances from the cast of “Into the Woods” as well as music by the Albrights, Hotel Bravo and Tim Britt. – Colin Dabkowski
