New York Sea Grant is accepting applications for a weeklong teacher training cruise from July 7 to 13 on Lake Ontario aboard the Lake Guardian, a 180-foot research vessel docking in Youngstown. Space is limited to 15 teachers in grades 4 to 12 and nonformal youth educators. Deadline for applications is Tuesday.
The teachers will “personally experience the interaction of the Great Lakes’ water, weather, aquatic species and other natural and man-made elements,” said Helen Domske, Sea Grant coastal education specialist and lead educator on the cruise. “They will collect and analyze data alongside scientists and work with colleagues to develop unique classroom teaching tools.”
The program includes on-deck activities to develop learning activities for students and follow-up assistance after the cruise to help teachers in the classroom.
