A memorial service for Ronald E. Odle, a retired U.S. Postal Service employee, will be at 2 p.m. May 26 in Unitarian Universalist Church of East Aurora, 94 Buffalo Road.
An East Aurora resident, Mr. Odle died Feb. 13 at his winter home in Gold Canyon, Ariz., after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 78.
Born in Buffalo, he began working when he was 6 years old, collecting scrap metal in a bucket. Before he reached age 16, he had also picked vegetables, worked a newspaper route, sold fireworks and stocked shelves at a local five and dime store.
Mr. Odle worked at the Bethlehem Steel plant before serving a four-year stint in the Navy, during which he traveled to Japan. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo. During his 25-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, he served as postmaster of Jamestown and then as division director of field operations for Western New York. He retired in the mid-1990s and then traveled extensively. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist churches of Hamburg and East Aurora.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Carol Bolyard; two sons, Jeffrey and David; and a daughter, Lisa.
