Moog Inc. has laid off 18 full-time employees locally, citing uncertainty stemming from pending federal government spending cuts.
The Elma aerospace company said it is laying off a total of 97 employees worldwide, including the local layoffs.
“Without specific direction from our U.S. government customers, we don’t have a clear view of our military programs looking out into the future,” Moog said in a statement. “We are taking this step to manage through the pending sequestration cuts. We regret that this uncertainty in our defense businesses is impacting our employees and their families.”
Moog said it has about 11,300 full-time employees worldwide, including 3,000 in Western New York. The company is set to release its quarterly earnings figures Friday.
Sequestration refers to the draconian automatic federal budget cuts that have begun to take effect over the past several weeks.
