NIAGARA FALLS – A man’s body was spotted in the Upper Niagara River just west of the New York Power Authority intakes and was pulled out by State Parks Police with help from an Erie County Sheriff’s Department boat just after 11 a.m. Monday.
“With the cold water it is hard to tell how long the body had been in the water,” said State Parks Police Lt. Patrick Moriarty.
Moriarty said a woman riding her bicycle along the river bike path spotted the body and called police.
The body had floated into a shallow area, but police couldn’t reach it from shore. Moriarty said the Erie County Sheriff’s Department used its boat to help move the body to the LaSalle Yacht Club, where it was pulled out of the water.
Moriarty said the man matches the description of a person who was reported missing, but said he did not want to identify the man until authorities can complete an autopsy and contact family members.
An autopsy was scheduled for today at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, Moriarty said.
