The Western New York Flash earned their first point of the National Women’s Soccer League season, playing to a 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
Sam Kerr scored in the 85th minute to put the Flash in front, 1-0. However, a converted penalty kick by Diana Matheson of Spirit just two minutes later tied the game.
Abby Wambach had two solid chances in the first half but couldn’t get the ball to cross the goal line. In the 19th minute, Kerr sent a chip in to Wambach, but her shot rocketed off the crossbar. Nearly 10 minutes later, Wambach was stopped by goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris on what may have been the save of the game.
The Flash drew a number of corners in the final minutes, but could not reclaim the lead.
WNY held a 12-7 advantage in shots, with Adriana Franch of the Flash making three saves and Harris finishing with four.
The Flash will next face the Boston Breakers at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester in their home opener at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday.
