Alfred J. Follett of the Town of Tonawanda, former president of the union at the Dunlop Tire plant, died Sunday in DeMay Living Facility, Newark, N.Y., after a lengthy struggle with dementia. He was 70.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Kenmore East High School and began working at Dunlop as a laborer in 1966. He was head of United Rubber Workers Local 135 during the early 1990s and is credited with helping to save the plant from closure.

Mr. Follett was a longtime member of the Brighton Volunteer Fire Company.

Surviving are a son, Paul; a daughter, Colleen Rogers; a brother, Fred; and four sisters, Bonnie Sindoni, Patty Ann Szaflarski, Renee Donovan and Tammy Aznoe.

A memorial service was held Thursday evening in Lester Wedekindt Funeral Home, 3290 Delaware Ave., Town of Tonawanda.
