Tundo notches 500th win

Orchard Park defeated Frontier, 15-5, in boys lacrosse Wednesday for coach Gene Tundo’s 500th win.

Austin Goltz had eight goals for the Quakers while John Januszkiewicz had four on top of the six he scored against Clarence on Monday. Tim Wagner, Adam Belica and Ralph Pagliei had single goals for OP. Goalkeeper Taylor Ferrino had eight saves.

“We played OK. We didn’t play great but we played hard,” said Tundo, who began coaching at OP in 1980.

Of the 500 wins, the one Tundo says he remembers best is the victory over Syracuse-area power West Genesee to go to the state finals in 2000.

“Nobody from this side of the state had ever beaten them before. No Western New York team had gone to the state finals,” he said.

Honors’ long win streak ends

Kayla Hahn allowed just one-hit — a seventh inning single by Chase Gifford -- and struck out 11 batters in pitching Hutch-Tech to a historic 3-1 victory over City Honors in Thompson Trophy girls softball Wednesday in Houghton Park.

It was City Honors’ first loss to a city opponent since 2001. City Honors has dominated softball play among Buffalo Public Schools for most of this century. Scoring against the Centaurs is one thing, beating them is another. City Honors went 10-0 against city opponents last season, outscoring them 164-3. Buffalo Arts had all three runs.

Hutch-Tech was the last team to beat Honors, taking a 7-6 win in the championship game of the 2001 Columbia Cup playoffs.

Quakers finally open

Orchard Park was the last of the ECIC I baseball teams to get its season opener in, defeating West Seneca West, 8-4. Junior right-hander Pat Sheehan had a no-hitter into the sixth.

Thunder lacrosse 2-0

Mount St. Mary, the Monsignor Martin girls lacrosse champion the last eight years, is off to a 2-0 start.

Marie Scime’s goal with 7:57 left, assisted by Olivia MacDonald, snapped a 9-9 tie and gave the Thunder a hard-earned 10-9 win over Sacred Heart Wednesday.

Scime and Elise Kreuz had three goals for Mount St. Mary, which opened league play last week by beating Nardin.
