Sad to read of passing of local bowling legend
I was saddened to read the obituary of Anthony “Nin” Angelo. As a young boy growing up on the West Side of Buffalo, one of my favorite sports programs was Chuck Healy’s “Beat the Champ.” I was amazed at the amount of local bowling talent. Names like Art Jeziorski, Don Whelan, Al Lacrego and the Schroeder brothers quickly come to mind.
The one that will always stick out is Nin Angelo. I watched every one of his 19 consecutive victories. No matter what I was doing, I went home to watch “Nin,” much like people now drop everything to watch “Tiger.” Sure, I was saddened to watch him lose on week 20, but he was gracious in defeat – just as gracious as the victor, John Fonagy Jr., a young student at Canisius College. In the post-match interview, I still recall John addressing Nin as “Mr. Angelo.”
